Contraiindication: 

  • Hypersensitivity to prostaglandins 
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease 
  • Ruptured membranes 
  • Malpresentation 
  • Cephalopelvic disproportion 
  • Grand multiparity 
  • Suspected foetal compromise 
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding 
  • Previous uterine surgery 
  • Situations where vaginal delivery is not indicated as in herpes genitalis

 Interaction: Oxytocics: Enhanced efficacy of oxytocics leading to uterine rupture. Antiprogestins (Epostane, mefipristone): Enhance efficacy of Dinoprostone. NSAIDs: Use the combination cautiously. Oestrogen: Enhances cervical ripening and potentiates efficacy of Dinoprostone when used for therapeutic abortion.

Servings: Cervical gel: 0.5mg Dinoprostone in to the cervical canal. Vaginal gel: 1mg Dinoprostone in to the vagina. Apply another 1 to 2mg; 6hours after the first dose as required. Vaginal suppository :( for uterus to contract to abort a pregnancy): 10 to 20mg in to vagina every 3 to 5 hours as required. Oral: 0.5mg hourly till induction up to the maximum dose of 1.5mg/hour.
